Fostering a culture of social security and health and safety in the workplace: The case of inland stevedores in Peru
In the Victoria market in Lima, Peru, dock laborers’ working conditions are critically poor; their guarantees for retirement, accident or occupational illness or injury are practically non-existent. In recent months, the Ministry of Labour and Employment Promotion, with inputs from European experts mobilised by SOCIEUX+, has explored innovative solutions to ensure that these workers, although many are informal, receive support and safeguards for their work.
Due to the restrictions on international travel, the final activity in this phase will be held remotely. This last activity addresses the idea of a culture of social security, health and safety in the workplace, and seeks to sensitize workers to their rights and needs, which can highlight the importance of social security policies, practices and protections to ensure professional health (SOCIEUX+ 2019-01 Peru).
Opportunities for greening the economy: Survey report on skills for green jobs in Togo
We are remotely continuing our work with partners from the National Agency for Employment (ANPE) in Togo. Recently, a virtual meeting was organised by ANPE, with partners from the public and private sectors and support programs, to present the results of the survey conducted by experts mobilised by SOCIEUX+, and to discuss the recommendations for ways that workers can adapt to the green economy.
SOCIEUX+ has partnered with ANPE to identify the competencies required for green employment, specifically in the areas of organic agriculture, renewable energy, waste collection and recycling. The findings from mobilized experts will be the inspiration for the next steps in our collaboration to address the jobs and skills challenges and seize the opportunities resulting from the transition to a more sustainable, healthier economic system (SOCIEUX 2019-16).
