Access to the labour market and social protection for people with disabilities

Highlights

Around 1.3 billion people worldwide live with significant disabilities, and this number is expected to increase due to factors like population growth and aging. People with disabilities face substantial barriers, particularly in labour market participation and access to social protection. SOCIEUX+ initiatives aim to promote employment opportunities and inclusive social protection systems for people with disabilities, leveraging EU expertise to support policy-making in partner countries.

The barriers to inclusion in labour markets and social protection systems for individuals with disabilities are persistent and multifaceted. Individuals with disabilities are disproportionately impacted by poverty and social exclusion due to barriers in education, transportation, healthcare, and workplace accessibility. Addressing these issues requires innovative, inclusive policies and commitment from policymakers to ensure people with disabilities can fully participate in society.

In the SOCIEUX+ metapapers, we synthesise knowledge on current policies, interventions or approaches, and their outcomes for beneficiaries, derived from technical cooperation cases carried out by the EU SOCIEUX+ mechanism in collaboration with its partners around the world over the last few years. The aim is to inform and inspire policy makers and stakeholders. In this specific meta-paper, we discuss the related to policies aimed at improving the access to the labour market and social protection for individuals with disabilities. To do so, we draw on concrete examples of interesting practices in different countries and regions of the world.
